Like decorating your home with candles?

They fill our spirits with light and warmth. They glow like a promise, illuminate the dark, and touch our hearts.

They remind us of home and hearth. We light them in memory of a loved one we hope will come home soon, or a loved one now departed, never to return. We light them to celebrate a birthday or a wedding.

If you like decorating your home with candles, you already know that a candle will enhance any décor. Although you may think of candles as mainly table ornaments or birthday cake decorations, you can use candles and their accessories in many different ways to make your home more warm and inviting.

You might add wall sconces along your central staircase. Electric wall sconces should be used to prevent fire hazards. These candles may use batteries or have electric cords. Wall candles add an elegant, romantic feel to a stairwell and create a sense of intimacy and an old-fashioned ambiance. Choose the style that blends in with your décor. Wall sconces also work well outside of often-used rooms like the bathroom, den, home office, or family room. You can install faux candles in your sconces just to make sure no one tries to light them!

Votive candles are especially decorative around the holidays. Set out a floral ring composed of non-inflammable plastic, vinyl, or fabric and place a candle in its center. You might place smaller candles around the main candle as accents. The candles could be in color-coded patterns that highlight certain holidays or in pastel shadings in a special design. White votive candles may be placed inside colored glass holders. They make wonderful centerpieces for Advent or Easter, as well as appropriate decorations to celebrate First Communion, baptism, or church membership.

Large, round candles can be used to create attractive centerpieces for holidays such as Thanksgiving, Christmas, Easter, and Memorial Day. You can put decorative trim around the base of the candle consisting of decorator craft items such as flowers, fabric, and other objects that will help make the candle reflect the occasion. Remember, however, to always be alert to fire hazards and never let a candle come in contact with inflammable materials.

Candle centerpieces or a candelabra can be used to commemorate special dinner celebrations. A candelabra often has a spiritual meaning for events like Passover or Christmas, or it may simply add a romantic touch to the evening. When it’s time to extinguish the candles, a flame quencher should be used.

You don’t necessarily need to light candles for them to be a part of an attractive centerpiece or decorative arrangement. You can also attach a candle to the center of a wreath and not light it. Candles at either end of a fireplace mantel are an elegant touch, as is a cluster of candles of various sizes and heights by the hearth when your fireplace is not in use.

Use candles to heighten intimacy, romance, and mysticism at your next gathering of guests or just for your own family. Few decorative objects add as much ambiance as a candle, especially a scented candle. Whether slender and tall or big and wide, candles can enliven any room.
