Gel candle creation

Do you love to burn fragrant, scented gel candles?

Do you know that you can easily make your own? It is fun and not at all difficult to make your own scented gel candles that you can burn at home, give away as gifts, or even sell. By following 10 easy steps, you can create your own unique candles.

Materials for Making Gel Candles

You’ll need gel, of course, and zinc wicks, essential oil, and liquid color dye. Embeds are optional. You can’t use cotton wicks in gel candles because they absorb too much gel.

You can obtain these materials online from candle making suppliers. Just be sure you select essential oils and colors especially formulated for gel candles. The fragrance oils you find in cosmetic shops are not suitable. You can also buy a gel candle-making kit. If you’re a beginner, a kit is a good choice because it will contain everything you need to make your first candles.

You’ll also need a container for each candle. A container made of glass is best for a gel candle so that you can see any embeds you put inside, but any non-inflammable container will do. You can use a simple glass, a wine glass, or even a small wide vase that is at least 2 inches in diameter. You can look for containers at garage sales and secondhand stores.

Embeds must be non-inflammable. Common embeds include pebbles, colored aquarium gravel, glitter, marbles, sand, sea shells, crystals, polished stones, artificial jewels, and pearls.

Steps to Making Gel Candles

1. Put a little hot glue in the center of the container’s bottom. Stick the end of the wick in it and let the glue set.

2. Cut the gel up into small pieces, which will ensure that they melt quickly and evenly, and put the pieces into a stainless steel pot. Melt the gel over medium heat.

3. Use a thermometer to heat the gel to exactly 200 degrees. Overheated gel looses its clarity.

4. Maintain the temperature at 200 degrees until the gel is smooth like syrup.

5. Add the dye a little at a time to the melted gel until you get the desired color. Remember you can always add more dye, but you can’t take any away. If you’re going to use embeds, add only a little color to ensure that the objects will be visible.

6. Add 1/3 teaspoon of fragrance for each glass of melted gel. This will give it a nice scent. If you want a stronger scent, add a little more fragrance.

7. Heat the containers in the oven or microwave to 150 to 160 degrees to reduce the formation of bubbles in the gel.

8. If you’re using embeds, first dip them in the hot gel and then arrange them in the container. Keep the objects close to the sides of the container so that they will be easy to see.

9. With your container on a level surface, pour the gel slowly and carefully into it down the side. If this is your first time, you are likely to get a few bubbles. To avoid bubbles, make sure the gel is very hot.

10. Pull the wick up through the gel. You can roll it on a pencil to keep it straight. After the candle cools, trim the wick and you’re done! You have a beautiful, unique gel candle you made yourself.
