Fire Danger and Candle Use

The popularity of candles is so great that in the United States that retail sales of candles in recent years has been over $2 billion annually, not including candle accessories. Unfortunately, candle fires account for approximately 2.4% of all fires resulting in 6% of total injuries and sadly 3% of all fatalities from fires. Because of the growing popularity of candles, these figures are increasing, according to the National Fire Protection Agency.

For centuries, people have safely enjoyed the use of candles. They provided us with light long before the light bulb was invented. Today, their colors and scents enhance our rooms and lives, evoking pleasurable memories from our past. When used correctly, candles can be a source of light. However, if left unattended or when certain precautions are not taken by the consumer, candles can be a cause of a fire hazard, which may result in unnecessary injury or even death.

Of all products, which cause residential fires, candles however, rank far behind cigarettes, matches, and cooking food left unattended. According to the National Fire Incident Reporting System or NFIRS, fires caused by candles occur more often in bedrooms, approximately 45.2%, then in family rooms or bathrooms and fires caused by candles in the kitchen accounts for only 6.3% of all incidents. In addition, according to the NFIRS, the materials, which are more often ignited by candles, are cabinetry, materials such as blankets, comforters, sheets, curtains, mattresses, and pillows.

Of all the fires caused by candles, the NFIRS has found that nearly 85% were due to the fact consumers misused the product. Some of the causes are as follows: Combustibles placed too close to the candle, candles left unattended, uncontrolled of open fire, children playing with the candles, carelessly discarded candles, and falling asleep while candles were burning.
