Candle Burning Tips Part I

It seems that we can't get enough of scented candles. We use them to brighten our rooms, and our moods with their wonderful aromas. However, burning aroma candles on a daily basis can be somewhat expensive.

Below are some candle-burning tips, which should help you get the best results from your candles as well as the most value for your money:

Candle Memory:

Candles have a memory. No, they won't remember your birthday or anniversary, but if you light a candle, then extinguish it before it forms a melted wax pool, which extends to it's container, the candle will then have a tendency to continue to burn straight down, leaving a large amount of unburned wax along the sides of the jar. For this reason the first few times, you burn your candle you want to let it melt across to the jar before you extinguish it.

However, there are times when a candle will not melt all the way to the jar. The most common cause of this is a wick, which is too small to create a flame large enough to melt the wax completely. On the other hand, if the candlewick is too long, the candle will burn too quickly and you won't get your moneys worth. The proper size wick is approximately ¼ inch.

The general guideline for the amount of time required to form a large enough melted puddle is approximately 1 hour per inch for diameter of the candle. In other words, if your candle has a diameter of 4 inches, then the first couple of times you burn the candle, you want to burn it for 4 hours. This will ensure that get the best results from your candle.

Puddle Size:

The bigger the puddle of melted wax, the more aroma the candle will give off. However, a small candle will not give off as much scent no matter how fragrant it is, than a larger candle. It is illogical to think that the aroma of a tiny candle will fill an entire living room with its fragrance. Therefore, when you burn smaller candles use them in small rooms or burn multiples at a time.

Trim that Wick:

Nearly every candle that you purchase will tell you to trim the wick approximately ¼ inch before lighting. However, most of us don't actually do it. The two main reasons why it is recommended to trim is to reduce smoke and so that the candle burns at reasonable rate.

Soy candles do not produce as much smoking as other types of candles, however, they too will burn too fast and produce smoke if you don't properly trim their wicks. When wick produces the small mushroom on the tip, this will remind you to trim the wick. Remember to not trim the wick too short or you won't have enough flame to melt the correct amount of wax around the wick. So, by trimming the wick, the candle will burn slower, produce less smoke, and puddle all the way to the edges.

Watch for Drafts:

Drafts will cause a candle to burn faster. Therefore, to get the most from any candle, it is important to keep it away from any drafts, including those produced by heaters and air conditioners. When you see the flame flickering, the candle is in the path of a draft and you'll probably not get as much use from the candle. The simple solution is to move the candle to another location, or shield it from the draft with a globe.

How to Clean a Spill:

If you ever spill any wax on your carpet or clothing, try this technique. First, let the wax completely harden, then remove as much of the wax as possible. The next step is to place a few paper towels over the wax and then with your iron set on low, carefully iron the paper towels. This should melt the wax, causing the paper towels to soak up the wax.

Candles that are made from soy and vegetable wax are water-soluble and should clean off of any surface with warm water and soap.
