Scents
mean more to us than just something pleasant for
the nose
Entire empires have been
built around our noses' need for fragrance. But
scents mean more to us than just something
pleasant for the nose. Scents are one of the
biggest memory triggers and mood enhancers that
exist.
While the living, dancing flame of a scented
candle can be beautiful, you don’t always want
something with an open flame to scent the air.
For example, you wouldn’t want to leave a candle
burning while you slept, or have one burning in
your car while driving. Sometimes burning a
scented candle is inconvenient, yet you want the
effects of one. Here’s one solution you can try:
scented candle melts.
Making Candle Melts
First, gather the following supplies: a few
scented candles such as natural wax votives, a
double boiler, and two plastic candy mold trays.
This will make 22 candle melts, which will keep
your house smelling good for a couple of months.
Be sure to select candles that have the
fragrance mixed all through the wax, not candles
with fragrance only on the surface of the wax.
Also, if you use soy wax candles, you can clean
up spills with soap and water.
Take your favorite scented votive candles and
remove the wicks. Melt them in the double
boiler, or use a Pyrex measuring cup in a pan of
hot water. Spoon or pour the wax into the candy
molds. When the wax becomes firm, slide the
trays into the freezer for 20 minutes. Last,
remove them from the freezer and they’ll pop
right out!
Using Candle Melts
High-quality scented candle wax works as well as
a sachet. Bag the wax in small sealable bags to
protect your clothing and put them in drawers.
Also put them in your car, out of the sun, to
serve as air fresheners.
To scent your home or office, you can melt them
on “tart warmers,” which you can buy at many
stores or online. Browse to find the size,
style, and type you prefer. Or, if you have an
electric stove, you can dedicate a small
oven-safe plate, saucer, pottery, or ceramic
dish for melting the wax over a burner. If you
don’t have the right dish on hand, you can find
one at a yard sale or secondhand store.
Place the dish on a cool electric burner before
you put the wax in. Turn the burner on very low
and warm the plate or dish up very slowly. You
don’t want it to crack from heat shock. Add a
couple of your little scented candle melts. When
they are melted half way, turn the heat off.
Repeat this process whenever you want to release
the scent again. You house will smell great!
